Cables and wires are an integral part of any electrical, network or AV installation, from domestic networks to large industrial installations. It is important to ensure not only the efficient transmission of energy or data, but also the safety of people during possible fires. In this context, the CPR (Construction Products Regulation) Cable Flammability Classes play a key role.

CPR is the European legislation that regulates the behaviour of building products, including cables, under fire conditions. The CPR Cable Flammability Classes define the reaction to fire of cables and help to assess their flammability.

The CPR flammability classification of cables includes several categories, the most important of which are:

  • Class B1ca and B2ca: Cables with moderate flammability, with minimal risk of smoke and toxic gas emissions during a fire. They can be used in a wide variety of applications, such as residential buildings.
  • Class Cca and Dca: Cables with limited flammability, characterised by controlled spread of fire and smoke. They are suitable for use in certain less risky environments.
  • Class Eca and Fca: Cables with normal flammability, only approved for limited applications such as outdoor installations.

The CPR classification helps designers, engineers and installers to select suitable cables depending on the specific construction and level of fire risk. The appropriate use of CPR-compliant cables can make a significant contribution to minimising fire losses and increasing the safety of building occupants.
