Auracast - Audio Broadcasting with Bluetooth LE Audio
Auracast is a broadcast audio technology built on the new generation of Bluetooth, LE Audio, developed by the Bluetooth SIG. A transmitter sends sound to any number of devices within range, much like a radio station. Listeners receive it directly on a compatible hearing aid, cochlear implant, earbuds or smartphone, or on a small receiver if their device does not support Auracast.
How Does It Work?
A transmitter connected to a microphone or PA system encodes the sound with the LC3 codec, which delivers good quality with low power consumption and low latency. Each stream has its own name, so listeners pick it from a list just like a Wi-Fi network, for example a room or a language version. A broadcast can be open or password-protected, which limits reception to a single room or group of people.
Where Is It Used?
Auracast works well in lecture and conference rooms, public offices, churches, museums, railway stations, airports and sports venues. It is a natural complement to an induction loop: hearing aid users get clear, noise-free sound, while other listeners can use their own earbuds.
