Wi-Fi Audio Streaming - Assistive Listening via Listeners' Smartphones
Wi-Fi Audio Streaming - Assistive Listening on Your Own Smartphone
A Wi-Fi streaming system sends sound from a microphone, PA system or other source over the venue's wireless network. Listeners receive it in a free app on their own smartphone and hear it through headphones, a hearing aid or a cochlear implant connected to the phone. The venue does not need to buy or hand out receivers, and the number of listeners depends mainly on network capacity.
How Does It Work?
An audio server converts the signal into an IP stream, and Wi-Fi access points distribute it across the venue. Latency is typically a few tens of milliseconds, so the sound stays in sync with the picture and the speaker in the room. One system can broadcast several channels at once, such as the original audio and an interpretation, and coverage grows by adding access points.
Where Is It Used?
Wi-Fi streaming works well in theatres, cinemas, concert and lecture halls, churches and conferences with interpretation. It can also combine sound with captions or additional content in the app. It requires a well-designed Wi-Fi network with sufficient capacity.
